Ascension Catholic Academy’s Summer SLAM (Super Language and Math) Program is a six-week curriculum for students from Ascension, Pope John Paul II, and St. Peter Claver offering new experiences and a deep immersion into critical-skills learning that will help them continue to excel during the school year. The program is a full-day, five-day-a-week program that provides math, reading, writing, literature, listening and speaking enrichment — plus meals.
SLAM is taught by Ascension Catholic Academy teachers and is open to scholars from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. The activities connect with the academic year but are built on innovative teaching techniques and class offerings such as gardening and creative writing. The program grew out of the need to maximize the opportunities of students – at all levels – to build their skills and broaden their experiences. The lessons of math, reading, literature and writing are woven into experiential and captivating activities perfect for a summertime program. An element of surprise, fun and hands-on learning permeates the days to keep a high level of interest and engagement.
Volunteers support teachers in the classroom, offer small group or one-on-one tutoring, assist on the playground and in the lunchroom, and attend field trips.
