Ascension kindergartners had a Literary Study of Gingerbread Stories that concluded in January with a STEM project. As you may recall, the Gingerbread Boy did not want to be eaten and ran away from every person and creature who posed a threat to him until he came to a river. There he met a fox there who said he would carry him across, but the fox betrayed him and ate him. Here is the challenge that teachers Michele Klein and Jamie Meyer put to the kindergartners: What if the Gingerbread Boy ran into three Kindergarten Engineers at the river instead of the fox? Can you use 4 popsicle sticks and a piece of foil to make a raft to help him across the river? We have to think quickly because many creatures are chasing the Gingerbread Boy. Could you do it in 15 minutes? Several teams successfully ferried the Gingerbread Boy across the river, while some others helped us learn about how engineers use mistakes to help them learn more.
